The aim of this article is to underline the advantages of the semiotic approach to translation problems. Departing from the Jakobsonian division into intralingual, interlingual and intersemiotic translation, translation theorists have come to the conclusion that all the categories represent not only three kinds (analytic perspective) but also three dimensions of translation (synthetic perspective). In consequence, the interpretation of a verbal text is of a semiotic order and a translator should be able to deal with the verbal and non-verbal signs as well. At the same time, the semiotic approach of Peircean provenance gives the theory of translation a chance to get rid of the controversial category of equivalence in favour of the triadic category of similarity, indexicality and conventionality at once. The accommodation of both ideas – the Jakobsonian and the Peircean ones – into the field of translation theory allows a more diverse approach to the target text, thus achieving better translation results. The combined method of translation tested on a short piece of text turns out to be useful for practical and didactic purposes.
