On temporalness of Polish and German participles and its influence on translating participial constructions

The objective of the paper may be described as an attempt at explaining the influence of temporalness of Polish and German participles in translating participial constructions. Individual forms of the participle refer to specific time divisions. The analysis of usage of participial constructions seems to indicate that the term temporalness may and should be assigned a broad range. The participial construction appears to be devoid of any features of grammatical tense and not committed to any of the real-time divisions. Its time reference, and, accordingly, its interpretation, are primarily determined by the superordinate construction. Other determining factors include the adjacency of the participle and its meaning, the type of action / state expressed by the participially used verb as well as the internal and external topology of the participial construction. Only the interaction of these factors renders an adequate analysis possible.References
