Abstract

In this text, Goethe develops his theory of translation, the initial outlines of which appeared in A Brotherly Remembrance of Wieland. A Speech Delivered at the Funeral Lodge [German: „Zu brüderlichem Andenken von Wieland“]. In addition to the two classical methods of translation – which Goethe described even before Friedrich Schleiermacher – he proposes a third method. Goethe’s reflections are a contribution to the methodology of translation theory, as well as to the theory and practice of translation studies, and to the history of the field.
