On ‘cult status’ books in Medieval Studies
Michael Clanchy and his “From Memory to Written Record”

The article discusses the phenomenon of ‘cult status’ books in contemporary Medieval Studies: books which in one way or another change the model of research, first by introducing new questions and new ways of investigation and then by being read and cited on every conceivable occasion. A good example of this phenomenon is the well-known book “From Memory to Written Record. England 1066-1307” by Michael Clanchy. Its three editions (1979, 1993, 2013) influenced Medieval Studies both in the United Kingdom and elsewhere by creating a new paradigm of studying of medieval literacy, in particular the study of the use of the written word as an instrument of power in State administration.
