The Last Will of Stanisław Lubieniecki (1615–1675)

The article presents a transcription and analysis of the previously unpublished last will of Stanisław Lubieniecki (1615–1675), a Polish Brethren clergyman and religious polemicist who, after 1655, lived in exile in Sweden, Denmark, and Germany. This document is unique as the only known preserved will of a Polish Brethren clergyman from the mid-seventeenth century. It is also a rare example of a last will of Protestant clergy from the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It allows us to see Lubieniecki as a spouse, patriarch of the family, and a pastor. The article highlights how closely the theology of the Polish Brethren in the mid-seventeenth century paralleled Reformed theology, including that of the American Puritans and French Huguenots, a fact to which the historiography of the Polish Brethren to date has given little attention.
