W artykule podejmowana jest kwestia przyczyn społecznych napięć i konfliktów na obszarach Wielkiego Sudanu (Sudan i Sudan Południowy). W tym celu autorzy analizują historięprocesów politycznych i społecznych, które wpłynęły na lokalne rozumienie władzy, statusu oraz przestrzeni. Autorzy akcentują także rolę dialektyki pogranicza w analizowaniu stosunków
społecznych nad środkowym Nilem.
