Abstract

This paper discusses the findings of field research on the revitalization of hand-weaving in the region of Podlachia, conducted among participants in the 2023 “SpoTKANIE” exhibition organized by the Podlachian Institute of Culture in Białystok as part of the 4th Weaving Festival “Podlaskie Sploty”. The study was grounded in the concept of embodied cognition and conducted by using the method of “thick participation” and autoethnography. The results indicate a shift in the significance of the weaving craft, moving from a utilitarian and economic practice rooted in traditional peasant culture toward a contemporary form of voluntary activity with creative, identity-shaping and communicative dimensions. The research participants, who represent diverse social backgrounds, view hand-weaving as a site of expression and reflective dialogue with the cultural heritage. They attribute particular significance to traditional looms, which they use as tools for creative expression and communication with the surrounding world, perceiving them as material carriers of memory that embody intergenerational relationships and local cultural traditions.
