Au « DEAR WHITE PEOPLE » : Lovecraft Country, une série contre Lovecraft ?

Abstract

Whether in the series of young adult novels “The Lovecraft College”, or the show Lovecraft Country, everything happens as if the very name of the American fantasy artist had become a kind of “franchise”, the mere mention of which ensures the branding of the object in question. But it is more a question of allusions to legends surrounding the author than of fine updates of his work; yes, the parade of horrors, more or less modelled on the principle of the monster of the week, alludes even more to Supernatural (compendium of all horror standards)… Inspired by one of the most openly racist writers of the first part of the twentieth century, the series by Misha Green paradoxically manages to bring together the popular cinematographic genres of the geek planet; this study underlines the “jump scares”, connected to the living Book, a gnostic heritage, metemsomatosis. This re-use offers a sidestep to the original work, by foiling the toxic solemnities of the model with humour and horror.
