Artykuł jest komentarzem do studium O. Hekstera „Emperors and Ancestors. Roman Rulers and the Constraints of Tradition” (2015), kóre jest poświęcone aspektom polityki sukcesyjnej i ideologii dynastycznej cesarzy rzymskich. Wychodząc od sformułowania Autora, że numizmaty stanowią jedno z ważniejszych źródeł do studiowania tych zagadnień, w artykule krótko odniesiono się do trzech kwestii: tradycji ikonograficznej w mennictwie i tworzenia nowych wyobrażeń, zmienności chronologicznej i geograficznej wizerunków cesarzy, którzy wspierali się autorytetem przodków, a także stosunków centrum – lokalne elity.
