The paper looks at the Austro-German breakthrough at Gorlice of 1915 which lead to a strategic defeat of the Tsarist forces. The authors analyse the strength Russian positions, the use of air reconnaissance by the Central Powers as well as the deployment of heavy artillery and reserves. The morale factor, and, perhaps most importantly, the faulty Russian chain of command are discussed and as the reasons for the Austro-German victory.
