In this essay, the author collects various examples of nineteenth- and twentieth century references to the Thermopylae epitaph: “Stranger, go tell Sparta that here we lie, obedient to her laws”. Among these references are Isandlwana (1879), Loncin (1914), Langemarck (1914), Stalingrad (1943), Kohima (1944). Above all, however, the author is interested in the phenomenon of the exceptionally numerous Polish adaptations of the Thermopylae epitaph; in his essay, he presents over forty examples of its use in the Polish language at various lieux de mémoire.
