The article addresses the practice of fasting and abstinence in the teachings of Ambrose of Milan, which were specifically addressed to candidates preparing for baptism. The catechumenate, understood as a path of gradual initiation into Christian life, was based on three elements: listening to the Word of God during catechesis, participation in rites and celebrations, and ascetic and penitential practices. As a consequence of these activities, a transformation of life and the full incorporation of the candidates into the community of the Church were to take place.
The article attempts to interpret Ambrose’s treatise On Elijah and Fasting from a catechumenal perspective, within the context of pre-baptismal preparation, in which ascetical practices also occupied an important place. In this approach, fasting and a restrained way of life are interpreted not only as external forms of discipline but also as means leading to a transformation of life, which is consistent with the pedagogy of pre-baptismal preparation, helping candidates shape a new way of life.
