the Second Letter of Peter, zoological proverbs, false teachers, vituperatioAbstract
The subject of the article is an analysis of two zoological proverbs that the author of the Second Epistle of St. Peter included in the part dedicated to reprimand directed against false teachers: “What they have done is exactly as the proverb rightly says: The dog goes back to its vomit and: As soon as the sow has been washed, it wallows in the mud” (2 Peter 2:22). This analysis is of a genological nature (it serves to more precisely define and classify the literary genre of both proverbs). It is also the analysis of source of the proverbs (with reference to analogous statements in ancient Greek and Jewish writings) and an exegetical analysis. The vituperative nature of the entire section (2 Peter 2: 17–22), marked by eschatological references, significantly influences the interpretation of both proverbs. It turns out that both are a metaphorical prediction of the final fate of false teachers who will not be able to endure before God.
