This article attempts a new reading of the paraenesis in the Letter to the Philippians (2:12–30) by applying the category of vertical social mobility (in its downward direction—downward mobility). This paradigm was adapted for the analysis of the Christological hymn in Phil 2:6–11 by Joseph H. Hellerman as a sociological counterpoint to the Roman system of honors (cursus honorum). In Polish biblical studies, dominated by philological-theological approaches (J. Flis, A. Jankowski), there are still few studies systematically linking the Christology of kenosis with the realities of social stratification in a Roman colony. The first part reconstructs the “honor market” in Philippi, utilizing research on Roman law (A.N. Sherwin-White) and slavery (J.A. Glancy). It is demonstrated that the pursuit of dignitas was the main axis of conflict within the community (κενοδοξία). The exegetical section proves that 2:12–30 is a strict operationalization of the hymn (2:6–11). “Working out salvation” (2:12) is interpreted as a corporate process of dismantling rivalry, and the metaphor of “shining like stars” (2:15) as an axiological inversion of the imperial social order. The analysis of the sacrificial motif (2:17–18) presents the Apostle’s potential death not as an act of infamy, but as a liturgical completion of the community’s gift, marking the final triumph of the cursus pudorum over the Roman logic of status. The analysis of the biographies of Timothy and Epaphroditus (2:19–30) presents them as “living icons” of this model, redefining the concept of honor (ἔντιμος) in early Christianity.
