Abstract

The paper analyses the late poem of Zbigniew Herbert, published posthumously: Contra Augustinum pontificem in Terra Nubica peccatorem in Purgatorio. It argues that although the poet was not particularly well versed in the theology of Augustine, he rightly grasped the implications of some of his ideas (including the famous “love and do what you want”) as justifying the use of violence in religious conflicts. Herbert abhors this fact, as he showed a long time earlier in his essay on the history of the Albigenses.
