The God of Israel reveals himself to Moses on Mount Sinai under the name I am who I am and Yahweh. Biblical fragments considered to be the oldest suggest that Yahweh comes to the Israelites from the areas of southern Transjordan, known as Seir, Teman, Edom, Paran. The origin of the Yahweh cult from the Kenites or Moabites was expressed in the Kenite theory, which is based on the role of Moses' father-in-law, Jethro, who came from Midian. The common origin of the Israelites and Edomites is another clue behind Yahweh worship in the south outside Israel. Inscriptions discovered in Egyptian temples of the period preceding the Exodus (in Soleb, Amara West and Medinet Habu) may deepen the insight. The form Yhw contained therein, identified with the name of the God of Israel, allows us to conclude that the shashu nomadic peoples inhabiting the desert east of Egypt identified themselves by Yhw.
