Biblical translations, translation of proper names, Polish biblical translations, theophoric names, biblical names, female names, masculine names, Job 42.14Abstract
Biblical personal names are usually transcribed or transliterated, not translated. However, most of them had a meaning known to the writers and readers, and the Bible itself contains many explanations of names. Following it, ancient and modern translators add occasionally explanations to the personal names. Many masculine names are theophoric, which makes them understandable but difficult to translate (except for some of them which were actually used in Polish and related languages in a translated form). Many biblical names of women refer to the female beauty and they could be translated, as it is often done in Job 42.14. Many important masculine names are not clear for us. Leaving proper names without translation disconnects the readers from an important aspect of biblical culture. Meaningful names are replaced by mere sounds. We should try to translate them and at least add explanations in brackets or footnotes.
