On the redundancy and indispensability of philosophy for social life - commentary on the translation of Johann Gottfried Herder's essay

The article deals with the problem of the legitimization of philosophy in the mid-18th century. It discusses the main theses and postulates of the reform of philosophy in the context of the question of its usefulness for the society of that time. The main point of reference is Herder's competition text, which includes his diagnosis of the state of academic life and his program for transforming philosophy into anthropology. Moreover, the early period of his studies in Königsberg and the beginnings of his philosophical creativity are presented.
