Peer Review Process
REVIEW PROCESS
- Every article is reviewed by at least two independent reviewers (from the outside of the Nicolaus Copernicus University, Editorial Board, and Journal’s Academic Board).
- In case of texts written in a language other than Polish, at least one of the reviewers is affiliated to a foreign institution, different than the nationality of the author. The reviewer is not an author in the issue which they review.
- The Editorial Board observes that the identities of the authors and reviewers are unknown to both parties.
- The review is provided in a written form and contains a clear request for an approval or a rejection of the text.
- The review form (in Polish and English) in *.pdf can be downloaded here PL or EN.
- The Editorial Board does not reveal the names of the reviewers to the authors. The lists of the reviewers who collaborate with the journal are published once a year.
- Authors of texts are informed about the conclusion of the review within three months from the date of submitting the text.
GHOST-WRITING PREVENTION (APPLIES TO TEXTS ACCEPTED FOR PUBLICATION)
- „Ghost writing” is when someone makes a substantial contribution to a publication but their name is neither disclosed as the one of an author nor mentioned in the acknowledgements included in the publication.
- “Guest authorship” or “honorary authorship” is when one claims to be an author or a co-author of a publication, although their contribution to it is insignificant or none.
- The Editorial Board endeavours to eliminate the phenomena of dishonesty and scientific misconduct (i.e. “ghost writing” and “guest authorship”).
- The Editorial Board requires authors to disclose authors’ individual contributions to the publication. (The author who submits the manuscript is held responsible for the disclosure.)
- Any instances of detected scientific misconduct will be revealed, including notification of relevant institutions (the author’s employer, scientific societies, science editors’ associations, etc.)
- The Editorial Board requires authors to provide information about means of funding the publication, the contribution of research institutions, associations and other entities (“financial disclosure”).
- The Editorial Board records any detected signs of scientific misconduct, especially the instances of breaching or violating ethical rules of research.
- Every author is required to sign an agreement with the Publisher, confirming the originality and authenticity of the submitted text, translation, or study. The agreement template can be downloaded in Polish or in English. Two copies of the completed and signed template should be sent to the Editorial Board.
- The Publisher does not pay royalties to the authors for the texts accepted for publication in the journal.

Ethical Standards
"Studies in the History of Philosophy" is committed to respecting ethical standards at all stages of the publishing process (collaboration with authors, reviewing, writing and publishing texts), in accordance with COPE standards. For more details, see: https://publicationethics.org/resources/flowcharts-new/changes-authorship. Below we list the most important expectations set forth for editors, reviewers and authors.
1. EDITOR’S DUTIES
To act in an honest, objective and fair manner, fulfilling the expected duties, without discrimination on grounds of sex, sexual orientation, religious or political beliefs, ethnic or geographical origin of the authors.
Consider the texts submitted for publication solely on the basis of their scientific value (without taking into account their possible commercial values).
Accept and compile submitted texts according to adopted and publicised procedures, and in the event of complaints regarding ethical standards or conflicts of interest proceed as appropriate in accordance with the procedures.
Provide authors with the opportunity to respond to any substantive allegations.
Consider possible complaints regardless of when the original publication appeared and store the documentation related to such complaints.
Editors bear full responsibility and have the right to reject or accept an article. Upon detection of any errors, the editorial team has the right to publish a correction or withdraw the text.
"Studies in the History of Philosophy" implement the principles of accuracy in scientific publications and procedures for the detection of scientific misconduct, particularly the instances of plagiarism, "ghostwriting" and "guest authorship." For this purpose we use CrossCheck (iThenticate) and Polish anti-plagiarism programmes (e.g. "Osa").
Cases of serious scientific misconduct (instances of plagiarism, "ghostwriting" and "guest authorship") will be disclosed and the relevant authorities will be notified of a copyright infringement.
The publisher of the journal "Studies in the History of Philosophy" has introduced procedures aimed at combating the phenomenon of "ghostwriting" and "guest authorship". All authors are required to complete and sign the "ghostwriting" and "guest authorship" declaration.
We are always ready to publish amendments and clarifications, and if necessary – withdraw a text and publish apologies.
2. REVIEWERS’ DUTIES
Streamline the decision-making process and improve the quality of a published text by reviewing the manuscript in an objective manner and within an optimal time frame. The evaluation should be objective.
Keep confidential all the information provided by the editor or author. Not store the manuscript or make its duplicates.
Notify the editor of any published or submitted content that is substantially similar to that contained in the reviewed text. The reviewer should be aware of potential conflicts of interest (financial, institutional relationships resulting from the collaboration of the reviewer and the author in the same projects or other such relationships), should alert the editor in the event that such a situation occurs and, if necessary, refrain from the evaluation of the submitted text. Reviewers should pay attention to published works that are not yet cited.
Reviewed articles should be treated confidentially.
3. AUTHOR’S DUTIES
All authors commit themselves to participate in the peer review process.
The author should keep an accurate record of data related to the submitted manuscript as well as render such data available at a justified request of the editor. In justified cases and where permitted by an employer, funding institution and other interested parties it will be allowed to deposit data in an appropriate repository or a place of storage for the purpose of exchange and further use by other persons.
The author signs the license declaration form and the author's declaration to state that all the information contained in the article is true and authentic. The author confirms that the manuscript sent had not been submitted for publication elsewhere.
The author declares which parts of the text overlap with other texts published or submitted by him/her for publication (by pointing to and citing these sources). The author provides the editor with a copy of a manuscript that may contain overlapping or closely related content to confirm that all the works in the delivered manuscript are original and point to or quote content reproduced from other sources.
The author provides his/her permission to reproduce the content from other sources (this particularly concerns translations).

Journal History
The "Studies in the History of Philosophy" journal was founded in 2010 at the Institute of Philosophy of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.
In the years 2010-2012 (issues 1-3) the magazine appeared as an annual, exclusively in a printed version.
In 2012 the magazine successfully passed parametric evaluation and was placed on the list of scored magazines of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of 17 September 2012.
Since 2013 "Studies in the History of Philosophy" have been published in an electronic version on the Academic Platform of Magazines of the Nicolaus Copernicus University (http://apcz.umk.pl/). From that moment (2013) the journal is published as a free and open access on-line quarterly. All the archival texts published since the beginning of the journal’s existence are available within the same formula.
Moreover, in 2014 a new series of publications was launched (THE LIBRARY OF "THE STUDIES IN THE HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY" JOURNAL), whose main purpose is to present archival source materials for the research on Polish philosophy. Thus far, four volumes have been published, containing archives and studies on the reception of Immanuel Kant’s philosophy in the Polish philosophy of the beginning of the 19th century. Full information on the series is to be found in the ANNOUNCEMENTS section.
