The Metaphysical Concept of Aevum and the Salvific Dimension of Time in the Christian Liturgy

This interdisciplinary study attempts to answer the question of whether it is possible—by way of a certain analogy—to draw a “parallel” between liturgical time, which contains the past and the future in its present, and aevum, which is a concept that expresses an existence that is everlasting and yet different from that of God by virtue of being subject to changes inherent in the nature of substances separated from matter, as taught by Saint Thomas Aquinas. It appears that this concept, developed upon the foundation of metaphysics, may provide a basis for an analogy that facilitates human understanding of the manner in which the salvific events of two thousand years ago are remembered and commemorated (and thus made present in a real manner hic et nunc) and, at the same time, the eschatic future is anticipated in the liturgy of the Church.
