A trend that gained popularity in the Third Reich was Neo-Marcionian theology, whose proponents opted to eliminate the Old Testament from Christianity in favor of a “moral renewal” of the religion of Jesus. This was met with opposition from numerous German theologians, including Paul Volz, professor of the Old Testament at Tübingen. This article presents Volz’s view of the Old Covenant in the context of the threat posed by the radical anti-Judaic tendencies that were gaining momentum in Germany in parallel with the development of his career. Particular attention is paid to Volz’s argument against the attempt – popular among folkist authors – to moralize Christianity and against the related belief in the absolute incompatibility of the Old Testament with Jesus’s Gospel of Love.
