Paul Tillich, mediation, pneumatology, Holy SpiritAbstract
The idea of mediation is of great importance to dogmatic theology as well as to ecumenical and interreligious dialogue. There is no doubt that the most important mediation in Christianity is that of Christ, but it does not exclude other forms of mediation. The mediating role of the Holy Spirit is becoming more and more visible to theologians. In his pneumatology, Paul Tillich did not call the Spirit the Mediator, but instead showed Him in an intermediary role. This article examines Tillich’s thoughts on the Holy Spirit from the perspective of mediation. First, the fundamentals of Tillich’s pneumatology will be presented, and then the role of the Spirit in the sanctification of man will be analyzed. The third part will present the media that the Holy Spirit uses to mediate His presence (the word, sacraments).
