Nelle sue "Notes of a Journey through France and Italy" (1824-1826), William Hazlitt mostra come l'Italia sia stata percepita all'estero agli inizi del diciannovesimo secolo. Anche se ancora divisa in regni, le bellezze naturali e artistiche della penisola sembrano anticipare la sua unificazione politica. Hazlitt descrive i pregi e i difetti delle città da lui visitate e delle persone incontrate, tracciando un ritratto appassionato e sorprendente di quello che è stata 'l'Italia prima dell'Italia'.Riferimenti bibliografici
