Il contributo si propone di illustrare il ruolo di Forster come intellettuale, attraverso l’analisi dei discorsi, dei saggi e degli interventi radiofonici degli anni Trenta e Quaranta del Novecento, in parte raccolti nel volume Two Cheers for Democracy (1951). L’autore espone qui il proprio ideale di cultura dinanzi agli eventi sociali e politici del tempo, un’età di crisi e mutamento, in cui agli scrittori spetta il compito di ricostruire la civiltà. In questo quadro, Forster afferma la necessità di difendere i valori liberali, pur con le loro mancanze e contraddizioni, dalle insidie del totalitarismo in Europa.
Non è un caso che i suoi scritti politici non siano stati tradotti in italiano, in linea con la ricezione tarda delle opere di Forster in Italia e con il polisistema letterario del contesto di arrivo. Il saggio The New Disorder (1941) rappresenta un caso isolato: appare in traduzione sul periodico Il Mese (Londra, 1943), tra le pagine di autori ancora ignoti in Italia o posti sotto silenzio dalla censura fascista. Nel contributo, Forster contrappone l’armonia dell’arte, rimedio al disordine del mondo contemporaneo, alla nozione politica di ordine promossa dai nazisti, a cui il titolo allude con una vena di ironia.
