The article has informational purposes and is focused on explaining the procedure of electing the President of the Italian Republic. It also describes the silhouettes of two Italian presidents. The first is Giorgio Napolitano, whose presidency aroused much controversy and is accused of abuse of asserting his prerogatives. The second is Sergio Mattarella – the current president, elected in 2015 after the resignation of Napolitano. His presidency is an example of performance of the functions in apolitical and balanced way. These two very different presidencies are shown on the background of accompanying events in Italian politics, such as changes in the position of prime minister, party crises and major reforms. Article contains also an information about the government of Matteo Renzi – the youngest Italian Prime Minister, who while assuming the office, announced far-reaching changes including tax reform, labor law reform and changes to the constitution.References
