About the Italianess in Ancient Artistic Literature on the Example of Il libro dell’arte by Cennino Cennini.

The Italian artistic literature takes its beginning from Cennino Cennini, whose tractate Il libro dell’arte is one of the first examples of Italian culture spreading world-wide. In this article we consider the Italianess itself, marks of which we find in Cennino’s work. From review of native editions, as well as European transcriptions of the tractate, it is possible to conclude how the perception of Italian, 14th century painting transformed over time, and highlight the main issues which were the crux of debates on the characteristics of 15/16th century artistic works; and especially of oil painting. The Italianess in the Cennino’s tractate is additionally analyzed from the linguistic point of view, and the key remarks relate to the theses presented in the work of Le vite by Giorgio Vasari.
