Focus and Scope

"Scientia et Fides" (SetF) is an open access online journal published twice a year. It is promoted by the Faculty of Theology of Nicolaus Copernicus University, in Torun, in collaboration with the Group of Research “Science, Reason and Faith” (CRYF), at the University of Navarra.

The journal is characterised by the interdisciplinary approach, multiplicity of research perspectives and broad reflection on methodology as well as analysis of the latest publications on the relationship between science and faith. The tasks of the journal are perfectly expressed by the motto "Veritas in omnibus quaerenda est"  ("to seek the truth in all things") from "De revolutionibus" by Nicolaus Copernicus.

SetF aims to present rigorous research works regarding different aspects of the relationship between science and religion. For this reason, SetF articles are not confined to the methodology of a single discipline and may cover a wide range of topics, provided that the interdisciplinary dialogue between science and religion is undertaken. The journal accepts articles written in English, Spanish, Polish, French, Italian and German which will be evaluated by a peer-review process.

Scoring by the Ministry of Education and Science (February 9, 2021): 100 points.

Peer Review Process

Two-stage Peer Review Process: an internal review by "Scientia et Fides" and the process of double blind review, that is two experts independent of the Editorial Office.

Reviewers’ responsibilities:

To contribute to the decision-making process, and to assist in improving the quality of the published paper by reviewing the manuscript objectively, in a timely manner.

To maintain the confidentiality of any information supplied by the editor or author. To not retain or copy the manuscript.

To alert the editor to any published or submitted content that is substantially similar to that under review.

To be aware of any potential conflicts of interest (financial, institutional, collaborative or other relationships between the reviewer and author) and to alert the editor to these, if necessary withdrawing their services for that manuscript.

The journal provides an Open Access to its content based on the non-exclusive licence Creative Commons (CC BY-ND 4.0).

Ethical Standards

The act of publishing involves many parties, each of which plays an important role in achieving these aims. It therefore follows that the author, the journal editor, the peer-reviewer, the publisher and the owner of journal have responsibilities to meet expected ethical standards at all stages in their involvement from submission to publication of an article.

“Scientia et Fides” is committed to meeting and upholding standards of ethical behaviour at all stages of the publication process. Below is a summary of our key expectations of editors, peer-reviewers and authors.

ETHICAL EXPECTATIONS

1. Editors’ responsibilities

To act in a balanced, objective and fair way while carrying out their expected duties, without discrimination on grounds of gender, sexual orientation, religious or political beliefs, ethnic or geographical origin of the authors.

To handle submissions for sponsored supplements or special issues in the same way as other submissions, so that articles are considered and accepted solely on their academic merit and without commercial influence.

To adopt and follow reasonable procedures in the event of complaints of an ethical or conflict nature, in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Society where appropriate. To give authors a reasonable opportunity to respond to any complaints. All complaints should be investigated no matter when the original publication was approved. Documentation associated with any such complaints should be retained.

Editors have complete responsibility and authority to reject/accept an article. When errors are found, promote publication of correction or retraction.

The journal “Scientia et Fides” implements anti-ghostwriting  procedure and strict plagiarism detection policy. In the case of "Scientia et Fides" it is used CrossCheck powered by iThenticate. No plagiarism, no fraudulent data.

Anti-ghostwriting  procedure: the editors consider the “ghostwriting” and “guest authorship” as a sign of very serious scientific misconduct. All the detected cases of the “ghostwriting” and “guest authorship”  will be exposed, including notification of relevant institutions. As a result, the publisher of the journal “Scientia et Fides” has introduced procedures to address the phenomena of “ghostwriting” and “guest authorship”. All the authors must fulfill and sign the declaration concerning “ghost-writing” and “guest authorship”. Always be willing to publish corrections, clarifications, retractions and apologies when needed.

 2. Reviewers’ responsibilities

To contribute to the decision-making process, and to assist in improving the quality of the published paper by reviewing the manuscript objectively, in a timely manner. Judgments should be objective.

To maintain the confidentiality of any information supplied by the editor or author. To not retain or copy the manuscript.

To alert the editor to any published or submitted content that is substantially similar to that under review.

To be aware of any potential conflicts of interest (financial, institutional, collaborative or other relationships between the reviewer and author) and to alert the editor to these, if necessary withdrawing their services for that manuscript.

Reviewers should point out relevant published work which is not yet cited.

Reviewed articles should be treated confidentially.

3. Authors’ responsibilities

All authors obliged to participate in peer review process.

To maintain accurate records of data associated with their submitted manuscript, and to supply or provide access to these data, on reasonable request. Where appropriate and where allowed by employer, funding body and others who might have an interest, to deposit data in a suitable repository or storage location, for sharing and further use by others.

The author signs a Licence Contract and Authors Declaration Form, which is the statement that all data in article are real and authentic.

To confirm/assert that the manuscript as submitted is not under consideration or accepted for publication elsewhere. Where portions of the content overlap with published or submitted content, to acknowledge and cite those sources. Additionally, to provide the editor with a copy of any submitted manuscript that might contain overlapping or closely related content.

To confirm that all the work in the submitted manuscript is original and to acknowledge and cite content reproduced from other sources. To obtain permission to reproduce any content from other sources.

Authors should ensure that any studies involving human or animal subjects conform to national, local and institutional laws and requirements and confirm that approval has been sought and obtained where appropriate. Authors should obtain express permission from human subjects and respect their privacy.

To declare any potential conflicts of interest (e.g. where the author has a competing interest (real or apparent) that could be considered or viewed as exerting an undue influence on his or her duties at any stage during the publication process).

To notify promptly the journal editor or publisher if a significant error in their publication is identified. To cooperate with the editor and publisher to publish an erratum, addendum, corrigendum notice, or to retract the paper, where this is deemed necessary. All authors are obliged to provide retractions or corrections of
mistakes.

Article Processing Charges and Submission Charges

The "Scientia et Fides" welcomes article submissions and does not charge a submission or publication fees.
