Scientia et Fides https://apcz.umk.pl/SetF
“Scientia et Fides” (SetF) is an open access online journal published twice a year. It is promoted by the Faculty of Theology of Nicolaus Copernicus University, in Torun, in collaboration with the Group of Research “Science, Reason, and Faith” (CRYF), at University of Navarra.

SetF aims to present rigorous research works regarding different aspects of the relationship between science and religion. For this reason, SetF articles are not confined to the methodology of a single discipline and may cover a wide range of topics, provided that the interdisciplinary dialogue between science and religion is tackled. The Journal accepts articles written in English, Spanish, Polish, French, Italian and German, which will be evaluated by a peer-review process.

<span https://apcz.umk.pl/SetF/article/view/35068
Ethical assessment of Modernity according to Alasdair MacIntyre

Can morality be understood in isolation from the social, cultural, political and economic orders in which it arises and develops? Does the intellectual interest in morality of our time require more than the analysis of ethical theories? Alasdair MacIntyre's answers to these questions are shown through a lifetime's work, in which he has developed an ethical analysis of Modernity. The book "Ethical assessment of modernity according to Alasdair MacIntyre", by Hernando José Bello Rodríguez and José Manuel Giménez Amaya, exposes the development of such an analysis, carried out by the Scottish philosopher within the framework of his ideas ranging from the publication of his After Virtue, until the recent appearance of Ethics in Conflicts of Modernity.
Jorge Martín Montoya Camacho Copyright (c) 2022 Scientia et Fides https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0 https://apcz.umk.pl/SetF/article/view/35068 Thu, 03 Mar 2022 00:00:00 +0100 Saint Paul's Thorn in the Flesh: a Dermatological Weakness? https://apcz.umk.pl/SetF/article/view/34398
Saint Paul's "thorn in the flesh" has been the subject of much controversy in medical, historical and religious literature. It was crucial for the development of Paul's theology and, therefore, its study is important for a better understanding of early Christianity. The purpose of this article is to review the available evidence on this issue, perform a historical and medical critical analysis and suggest plausible diagnosis that have not been previously published in scientific literature.

Our research on primary sources seem to indicate that in 41–42 AD Paul of Tarsus developed a clinical picture with a pain similar to that of a thorn injury and bad physical appearance. It could also have a chronic course with a limited number of relapses and few global. It could remind Job’s illness and provoke humiliation in Paul and repulse in his audience.

Multiple diseases could explain some of these data, but fewer explain all of them. Though a definitive diagnosis cannot be achieved, we think that cutaneous disorders are the most obvious candidates for a humiliating and painful disease which, however, would permit long journeys during more than a decade. Disorders with cutaneous involvement like lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, urticaria/angioedema, leukocytoclastic vasculitis or nodular vasculitis should be added to other possibilities previously reported.
Antonio Macaya Pascual, Ignacio Manresa Lamarca, Jaime Piquero Casals Copyright (c) 2022 Scientia et Fides https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0 https://apcz.umk.pl/SetF/article/view/34398 Thu, 03 Mar 2022 00:00:00 +0100 Evolución y relato: más allá del neodarwinismo y el diseño inteligente https://apcz.umk.pl/SetF/article/view/33225
Evolution and Story: Beyond Neo-Darwinism and Intelligent Design

This article analyses evolution from a philosophical perspective, contrasting the problems raised by both Neo-Darwinism and Intelligent Design theory. First, I discuss some of the problems that Synthetic theory presents from a scientific point of view, as well as the philosophical problems involved in the Neo-Darwinism of Dawkins, Dennett, Monod and Ruse. I argue that Neo-Darwinism, although presented as a scientific doctrine, is in fact fundamentally philosophical, and presents some important problems that make it difficult to believe. On the other hand, I discuss the scope of intelligent design as a philosophical stance on the evolution of living beings, showing its problems. Finally, I propose a credible philosophical account of evolution that seeks to go beyond a scientific reading of the data of experience
Manuel Cruz Ortiz de Landázuri Copyright (c) 2022 Scientia et Fides https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0 https://apcz.umk.pl/SetF/article/view/33225 Thu, 03 Mar 2022 00:00:00 +0100 Fundamental Theology at the Crossroads: Challenges and Alternatives After a Long Maturation https://apcz.umk.pl/SetF/article/view/34292
Fundamental Theology (FT) has undergone a slow evolution, as many other theological disciplines, since its inception in the aftermath of the Second Vatican Council. The lapsed time invites us to reflect about the current situation in this field and to what extent that theological section is pursuing its main objectives, especially for its teaching at different levels. After examining several issues that could have influenced that development, some suggestions for advancing the field and its teaching will also be given. Indeed, both the internal and external contexts have changed quite a lot in the last 60 years, and this probably will influence a treaty that should be more contextually sensitive and very bound to developments in religious education.
Lluis Oviedo Oviedo Copyright (c) 2022 Scientia et Fides https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0 https://apcz.umk.pl/SetF/article/view/34292 Thu, 03 Mar 2022 00:00:00 +0100 El naturalismo cientificista como pseudorreligión y anti-teología natural https://apcz.umk.pl/SetF/article/view/34808
Scientist naturalism as pseudo religion and anti-natural theology

After exposing the basic ideas of the naturalistic worldview (sections 1, 2 and 3), an attempt is made to show that naturalism is an interpretation of science that has an inescapable "mythological" dimension, in the sense that Midgley gives to this expression (section 5). This does not discredit it on principle but means that we cannot accept it uncritically by the mere fact that it appeals to the natural sciences to justify its validity. It is then argued that the central commitment of naturalists is the affirmation of atheism. In fact, the most radical contemporary naturalisms can be interpreted as an attempt to make every natural theology impossible, i.e., they seek to destroy the grounds on which reason classically relies to affirm the existence of God. It is argued that naturalism does not necessarily enjoy a priori epistemological superiority over theism.
Moisés Pérez Marcos Copyright (c) 2022 Scientia et Fides https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0 https://apcz.umk.pl/SetF/article/view/34808 Thu, 03 Mar 2022 00:00:00 +0100 The Man of the Shroud of Turin: Is He Dead or Alive? https://apcz.umk.pl/SetF/article/view/33531
It has been assumed that the person represented on the Shroud of Turin is dead and the image corresponds to a person dead from crucifixion. We have conducted an analysis of the cadaveric data of a body and the presence of face life signs and we could think that the image could corresponds to a living person. Therefore, it might correspond to a man starting a getting up gesture. If we examine the Gospels, a remarkable symmetry is found between the data obtained from the image and the events described in the Gospels, regarding the death and resurrection of Jesus.
Bernardo Hontanilla Calatayud Copyright (c) 2022 Scientia et Fides https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0 https://apcz.umk.pl/SetF/article/view/33531 Thu, 03 Mar 2022 00:00:00 +0100 The human conscience between witnessing and discernment: Heidegger, Ricoeur and beyond https://apcz.umk.pl/SetF/article/view/34750
The paper deals with the problem of human conscience as an attentional mode of being that effectuates an original capacity for discernment. Such an undertaking, after the necessary terminological and phenomenological clarifications, requires one to cope with its specific background, especially the critique of the moral worldview and the postmetaphysical setting of contemporary thinking. Taking into consideration the Heideggerian view of the matter, I reflect on the doubts Ricoeur addressed to the former, and take advantage of Ricoeur’s early philosophy to reinterpret and develop his own stance as expounded in Oneself as Another. His later work on ideology and utopia may contribute to helping to establish some criteria for the functioning of the conscience.
Promote a Mentoring Culture as Cornerstone to University Learning Process under Benedict XVI’s View

Benedict XVI’s idea of University invites us to reconsider its original vocation: the pursuit of truth, the transmission of values, the fruitful dialogue between Sciences and Humanities, and the synthesis of knowledge embodied in educators and students. From the study and analysis of his texts, we propose the university as a privileged place to recover the integral formation that concerns the whole person and that longs for an encounter with the vital reality of our students, with their deepest wishes and questions. One of the essential keys to fulfil this mission is to create a culture of accompaniment that commits us to the integral development process of each person, what would make it possible to transform society.
Fernando Viñado Oteo, Susana Miró López Copyright (c) 2022 Scientia et Fides https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0 https://apcz.umk.pl/SetF/article/view/34097 Thu, 03 Mar 2022 00:00:00 +0100 From Absolute Mind to Zombie: Is Artificial Intelligence Possible? https://apcz.umk.pl/SetF/article/view/29708
The dream of achieving artificial intelligence (AI) and, in particular, artificial consciousness (‘strong AI’), is reflected in mythologies and popular culture as utopia and dystopia. This article discusses its conceptual possibility. It first relates the desire to realise strong AI to a self-perception of humanity as opposed to nature, metaphorically represented as gods or God. The realisation of strong AI is perceived as an ultimate victory on nature or God because it represents the crown of creation or evolution: conscious intelligence. The paper proceeds to summarise two debates relevant to AI: one educational and one technological. The technological debate, almost invariably presupposing a materialist framework, is related to the mind–body problem of philosophy; the educational one to understanding the concept of intelligence. By proposing a definition of intelligence linked to an idealist conception of reality, postulating mind as participation in Absolute Mind, I attempt a convergence of these debates, rejecting the possibility of strong AI.
Moritz Ernst Maria Bilagher Copyright (c) 2022 Scientia et Fides https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0 https://apcz.umk.pl/SetF/article/view/29708 Thu, 03 Mar 2022 00:00:00 +0100 Rationality and Human Fulfilment Clarified by a Thomistic Metaphysics of Participation https://apcz.umk.pl/SetF/article/view/31050
A Thomistic metaphysics of participation in being offers an account of rationality that is more complete and coherent than that of nonreductive physicalism. It is a reasoned understanding of how an embodied intellectual subject shares in being and intellectual life. This metaphysical framework supports an understanding of rationality as a participated power, and an essential property of human nature empowering persons to know reality and make choices accordingly. Human fulfilment in truth and love is a consequence of the grounding of the transcendentals of truth and goodness in being. In contrast, nonreductive physicalism reduces rationality to processes and subjective experiences and can offer no priority between human material and spiritual fulfilment. Although a Thomistic metaphysics of participation in being has been effectively absent from Anglo-American hylomorphic philosophy of mind, this paper suggests it is time to reassess the benefits it offers.
Andy Mullins Copyright (c) 2022 Scientia et Fides https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0 https://apcz.umk.pl/SetF/article/view/31050 Thu, 03 Mar 2022 00:00:00 +0100 Transhumanismo y Gnosis: Un Paralelismo https://apcz.umk.pl/SetF/article/view/34415
Transhumanism and Gnosis: A Parallelism

The aim of this paper is to draw a parallel between the phenomenon of gnosis and transhumanism together with its ultimate version, posthumanism. Finally, the two doctrines are framed within the context of the Gnostic revolution, emphasizing the sense of uprootedness and post-modernity to explain the resurgence of these phenomena.
Towards a politics of embodied disability

The political treatment of disability has received a new impulse during the second half of twentieth Century. Within this impulse, the so named “social model of disability” supports that disability is a social construct, derived from the oppression that a capitalist society exercises over a minority with impairments. Thus, the social model of disability establishes a radical dichotomy between impairment and disability which relegates our corporal condition to the shadow of the discussion. Soon, within the disability studies field grew critical voices alerting that the social model leads to a disembodied disability. In a different context of the disability studies, Alasdair Macintyre makes a suggestive proposal by radicalizing human being´s animal condition as well as his social dimension. It is worth exploring this line of inquiry to arrive to a truly embodied vision of disability.
Francisco Santamaría Egurrola Copyright (c) 2022 Francisco Santamaría Egurrola https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0 https://apcz.umk.pl/SetF/article/view/35429 Thu, 03 Mar 2022 00:00:00 +0100 In Favour of Dispositional Explanations. A Christian Philosophy Perspective with Some References to Economics https://apcz.umk.pl/SetF/article/view/35094 From among philosophical concepts of explanation those referring to causes have been the most influential. The aim of this paper it to show that a particular kind of causal explanations, namely dispositional explanations are particularly suited to explain the workings of the world. Apart from purely philosophical arguments, I claim that the view treating dispositions as important elements of the basic ontology of nature is in line with the Christian worldview and the ways God impacts the world. Also, this paper shows that dispositional explanations are not only appropriate in the domains studied by natural sciences but also in the ones being under investigation in social sciences, and thus the case of economics. This allowed people to believe that the Earth and its inhabitants were the most important thing in it. But this misfires in several ways: First, the premodern cosmos is only small in comparison to what contemporary science has discovered, not absolutely. Second, the premoderns felt just as insignificant as we do in light of the universe’s size, but we cannot translate this into a scientific or philosophical argument. Third, it assumes that the Judeo-Christian view is that humanity is the most important thing (rather than God) and that God created the universe for us (rather than himself). Fourth, whatever value human beings have in the Judeo-Christian tradition is derivative, based on being created in God’s image, and the size of the universe has no bearing on it.
Jim Slagle Copyright (c) 2022 Jim Slagle https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/4.0 https://apcz.umk.pl/SetF/article/view/35794 Thu, 03 Mar 2022 00:00:00 +0100
