The idea of world heritage and its transformation in the run-up to Toruń’s inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List

The inclusion of the medieval urban complex of Toruń on the UNESCO World Heritage List in December 1997 was the culmination of a long preparatory process initiated at the end of the 1980s among historians, conservators and museum workers in Toruń. The problems accompanying these efforts, as well as the most important stages of the process culminating in the preparation of documentation for the application for inscription, have been discussed in many publications. This article attempts to present the broad ideological context accompanying the transformation of the UNESCO world heritage concept, including the first projects for the protection of the ‘common heritage of mankind’ at the time of the League of Nations, the initiatives preceding the adoption of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage in 1972, and the theoretical postulates being a reaction to the progressive globalisation and institutionalisation of the heritage concept in the last decades of the 20th century.
