Correct the predecessor? – translators’ concepts and ideas in the series of translations on the example of a short story Panny z Wilka by Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz and its translations into German

The aim of this paper is to outline a variety of problems in the series of translations on the example of a short story Panny z Wilka by Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz and its three translations into German that were created in short intervals in 1956, 1963 and 1985 in East and West Germany. The starting point are considerations on theories of the role of the translator and reflections about the meaning of re-translation. In this paper the most important question concerns motivations and strategies in the translators’ approach and the existence of different concepts and ideas of translation. The object of analysis are German translations by Kurt Harrer, Henryk Bereska and Klaus Staemmler.
