Translation: an assertion or a suggestion?

A number of fundamental questions are asked in this paper. First of all, what should translation really aim at, that is what should really be translated: an assertion or a suggestion? Secondly, where are the limits to the translator’s freedom when the translation of a text gives way to individual interpretation? The first part of the paper is a short introduction to the notions of an assertion and suggestion perceived in terms of logic. Subsequently, having collected relevant examples from the Polish translation of ‘The Stranger’ (‘L’etranger’) by Albert Camus, the author indicates mistakes made by the translator while rendering the French text into Polish. The translator, rather than translate the meaning of the source text, i.e. the assertion, translated suggestions inferred from the source text.
