This paper explores the notion of “translation series” in the sense of this term used by E. Balcerzan and A. Legeżyńska, i.e. multiple translations of the same literary work treated as a systematic phenomenon. It concentrates on the polemical translation, i.e. the situation when the translator consciously chooses to differentiate his/her work from the previous translation(s) in the series, suggesting a different interpretation and rendition of the original. The phenomenon is illustrated with children’s literature, in which area retranslations of classics are relatively common, with polemical translations, recognisable either due to translators’ declarations or to the markedly different translation strategy in comparison with the previous renditions, usually standing out as examples of resisting the traditional domesticating and adaptive approach to children’s literature translation. Following the assumptions of the polysystem theory and Descriptive Translation Studies polemical translations of children’s classics are interpreted as evidence of attempts to change the translation norms, and of the growing status of children’s classics in the literary polysystem. On the other hand, some facts concerning the reception of attempted polemical translations of children’s classics exemplify the conservative expectations and tendencies within the target system, which largely influence the translation practice. Examples are drawn from three polemical translations of English language children’s classics into Polish: W.M. Thackeray’s The Rose and the Ring, L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables, and A.A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh.
