The present paper attempts to reflect on the monograph by Ewa Gumul entitled Explicitation in Simultaneous Interpreting. A Study into Expliciting Behaviour of Trainee Interpreters. It is composed of the preliminary remarks including examples of explicating behavior from the co-author’s translation practice, an outline of the book in question, an overview of its reviews, and some critical remarks on selected aspects of the book. The examples demonstrate that explicitation is a universal phenomenon and an inherent part of interpreting that may serve as a translation strategy fostering communication or filling cultural gaps. The article presents further Gumul’s research questions, theoretical framework and methodology employed in the study, as well as the conclusive remarks. The paper addresses reviews of Gumul’s book submitted by the habilitation committee and the review article by Małgorzata Tryuk. Whereas the former provide an outstandingly good evaluation of the book, the latter regards some aspects of the book as its possible weaknesses. The issues raised by Tryuk and addressed in the present review article pertain to participants of Gumul’s study, English as the language of the book, and the notions of explicitation and translation strategy. The number of participants seems to be adequate to obtain reliable results of the study. As both ardent supporters and strong opponents of English as an academic lingua franca could provide enough arguments proving their points, the choice of English as the language of the book seems to be a marginal remark. Aside from that, this article comments on the use of the personal pronouns “we” and “I” in the book in question with reference to its author. As its use seems to follow rather Polish than academic English writing style, it may sound unnatural to a native speaker of English. Apart from that, the article points out that the term “strategy” as a designed plan cannot be successfully applied with reference to interpreting, which is spontaneous by definition and requires from the interpreter adaptability and quick-thinking. The article concludes with the statement that Ewa Gumul’s book is a valuable source of knowledge on explicitation and that some prospective reflection on explicitation as a translation universal could provide a deeper insight into the topic.
