Uniwersum Chin w klasycznym języku Europy. Jean Theodore Royer (1737–1807) i jego „Nomenclator Sinicus”

Niniejszy artykuł poświęcono osobie Jeana Theodore’a Royera (1737–1807), haskiego prawnika, człowieka o szerokich horyzontach i zbieracza orientaliów, którego kolekcja stała się podstawą zbiorów orientalnych Królewskiego Gabinetu Osobliwości. W dziale Zbiorów Orientalnych Biblioteki Uniwersytetu w Lejdzie jest przechowywany rękopis Royera, opatrzony sygnaturą Or. 8966, przez pryzmat którego chcemy przyjrzeć się tej wyjątkowej na tle epoki postaci zainteresowanej kulturą Chin nie w sposób powierzchowny, a naukowy. Niezwykle interesującą (i znaczną) częścią notatnika jest Nomenclator Sinicus – glosariusz chińsko-łaciński, któremu poświęcamy część naszych rozważań z nadzieją, że wobec wciąż mało zaawansowanych badań nad nowożytnymi słownikami oraz gramatykami języków pozaeuropejskich nasz artykuł będzie stanowił w tej kwestii skromny przyczynek. Nomenclator poza glosariuszem obejmuje wywody na temat języka chińskiego. Royer korzystał z pomocy Chińczyka Tana Assoy’a oraz z wszystkich ważniejszych, dostępnych w osiemnastowiecznej Europie prac na temat Państwa Środka.
