This article concerns F. Prescendi’s book „Lupae. Présences féminines autour de Romulus et Rémus” (Turnhout 2024). It explores the problem of the presence of female human and animal protagonists in myths about the origins of Rome. These are, in particular, Ilia/Rhea/Silvia, Acca Larentia and the She-wolf. The analysis of literary sources, supplemented by selected iconographic material, has revealed that the so-called secondary personages of the founding myth are equivalent to the founder figure; they also embody the fundamental values – ubertas and fecunditas – that no longer belong not only to the components of the founding myth but also to the city and its empire. The article discusses the content of the monograph and, by focusing on the motif of the lupa Romana and its connotations, points to the inspirational value of the book.
