Abstract

Background. Sport climbing is becoming increasingly popular, especially after being added to the Olympic program. Both amateur and professional climbers are preparing through training programs, developing general strength, power, endurance and specific skills. Other factors related to sports results include nutrition, proper recovery, and the use of supplements, which are widely discussed in this article.

Aim. The aim of this study is to evaluate and summarize the impact of different supplements on sport performance, health, and overall wellbeing of climbers, considering many factors influencing the effectiveness of supplementation (including competitive and recreational levels of athletes and different genders).

Research materials and methods. A narrative review of the literature was conducted using PubMed and Google Scholar. Attention was devoted to meta-analysis and systematic reviews focused on the impact of supplements on sport performance, especially among climbers.

Summary and Conclusions. Supplements intake can have a significant impact on climbing performance. It can not only enhance physical parameters, like upper-body strength or forearm endurance, but also increase alertness, improve cognitive functions and wellbeing of athletes, although more research should be provided to understand and evaluate all potential risks and benefits.
