Are we ready? Death and dying in the eyes of contemporary nurses

This study explores the readiness of contemporary nurses to accompany patients through the process of dying. Although death is an inseparable part of life, it remains a taboo subject both in society and within the medical community. Using grounded theory methodology, the authors conducted qualitative research among 168 nurses—master’s degree students, most of whom participated in thanatology classes.
The main objectives of the study were: to understand nurses’ experiences related to patient death, to identify emotions and attitudes toward dying, to assess the impact of education on preparedness for conversations about death.
In-depth individual interviews were conducted. Participants’ responses revealed that lack of education and the taboo surrounding death lead to emotional unpreparedness, difficulties in communication with terminally ill patients, and the isolation of the dying. Nurses often do not know how to talk to patients and their families, or how to act after a patient’s death.
The findings highlight the need for: systematic inclusion of thanatology in nursing education,development of communication and emotional competencies, fostering a culture of openness within medical teams, providing psychological support and supervision for staff.
The authors emphasize that only through education and systemic support can dignified care for the dying be ensured and the psychological burden on nurses reduced.
