Senegalese Immigrants in Spain: Between Integration and Social and Cultural Separation

During the last decades, Spain has become a more and more multicultural society due to the growing number of immigrants and their next generations. This article uses the example of the Senegalese community to explore the phenomenon of multiculturalism in Spain. They represent an exceptionally distinctive community on the path between cultural separation and integration, referencing John W. Berry’s model of acculturation. The article analyses social, economic and cultural determinants of this community’s situation in Spain. It focuses on the determinants of Senegalese immigrants’ situation and the challenges that arise against the backdrop of interactions between this community and the host society. The author also reflects on the issue of the ethnocultural distinctiveness of this group in normative and institutional terms and analyses the consequences of this distinctiveness.
