The article analyzes the stages of economic development in Italy from the mid-19th century to the 1990s. The Italian economy is an interesting example among developed capitalist countries. In the post-war years, Italy, starting from a low level of economic development, quickly became one of the world’s industrial powers. The 1950s and 1960s were a period of dynamic industrialization of this country, which resulted in the emergence and dynamic development of a number of modern industries, especially chemical and engineering. Italy was even considered an example of an “economic miracle”. The main feature of this period was the rapid growth of gross national product (GNP) and net national product (NNP), which was accompanied by a high investment rate, dynamic growth in exports, a significant reduction in unemployment and profound changes in the structure of employment. Since the mid-1990s, the Italian economy has been developing significantly slower than the EU average.
