Image of the Teutonic Order in the Eyes of Polish Youth: An Analysis of Questionnaire Research

The aim of the article was to link the opinions and knowledge of Polish high school students about the Teutonic Knights with the contemporary scientific and educational narrative regarding the Teutonic Order. Initial research was limited to target groups of secondary school students in Kraków and Lublin. The research method was a distributed survey with closed questions. Based on the conducted analyses, it can be concluded that despite changes in the scientific and textbook narrative, which to a greater extent emphasizes the cultural and economic role of the Order, the military dimension still dominates in the perception of the Knights. The image of the Order among students is slowly becoming more nuanced and is far from a clearly negative black legend. In the light of the students’ answers, it can be concluded that the Teutonic Knights are no longer as “insidious” and “destructive” as they were portrayed in the times of the Polish People’s Republic.
