Plants affecting coagulation processes have already been used as herbal remedies in medicine to treat various diseases as hemorrhoidal disease, excessive bleedings, atherosclerosis, thrombosis and many others. The important groups are antiplatelet and anticoagulant plants, and they could be a safe alternative for synthetic anticoagulant drugs in prevention and treatment of thrombosis and
cardio-vascular disorders. Compounds such as flavonoids, coumarins, alkaloids, polyphenols, polyphenol-polisaccharide konjugates, terpenoids and others are responsible for the antiplatelet effect. The inhibition of platelet aggregation by herbal remedies can be caused by influence on different paths of platelet activation. According to scientific researches the platelet activation can be inhibited via arachidonic acid, collagen, ADP, calcium ions, and thrombin dependent path.
However the majority of experiments to determine activity of plants extracts were carried out in vitro, with limited in vivo research. The safety of many herbal extracts has not been proven. Patients on anticoagulant therapy should be aware of a drug-herb interaction.
