Abstract

Significant amount of studies on the role of micronutrients in ophthalmology has been published in recent years. The macular pigment carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin are the constituents of dietary supplements dedicated for the prevention of visual loss from age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and other ocular diseases. These carotenoids increase total amount of macular pigments and thus may lower risk of AMD. Dietary supplement should contain lutein and zeaxanthin (5:1), as
well as anthocyanins (bilberry extract), vitamin C, E and zinc. At present, properly adjusted everyday diet and intake of dietary supplements are recommended to people with already progressing AMD and at an increased risk of the disease development.
