Abstract

Eleuthero is a shrub originating from Far East Asia. Underground organs (rhizomes with roots) are collected from this plant as a pharmacopoeial raw material. They are rich in glycosides, mainly phenylpropanoids, lignans and coumarins, commonly
known as eleutherosides. The raw material is standardized for the sum of eleutherosides B and E (min. 0.08%). In folk medicine, Eleuthero roots has been used for over 4,000 years. Nowadays they are recommended as a tonic in the states of physical
and mental exhaustion, in rheumatic diseases, sleeping disorders, in the adjunctive treatment of diabetes, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and in patients suffering from concentration disorders, depression, and in cancer prevention.
