Pitfalls of Military Interventions. Lessons Learned from the Dutch ‘Police Actions’ in Indonesia in 1947–1949

In December 2023, 75 years passed since the Kingdom of the Netherlands started the second military intervention in the Republic of Indonesia. The 1947 and 1948 wars are called ‘the first and second police action’. In 1949, the Republic of Indonesia gained independence. The article describes these wars’ course and political consequences, including an apology from the King of the Netherlands and the Dutch prime minister for the violence of those periods. These events resemble recent ‘special operations’ conducted by Russia in Ukraine. The various stages of the Dutch Military Aggressions are a possible scenario for the course and conclusion of the Russo-Ukrainian War.
