In Search of Biblical Gilgal

This article is a critical review of Dariusz Dziadosz’s monograph Gilgal. Biblia – Archeologia – Teologia. Studium historyczno-krytyczne deuteronomi(sty)cznych tradycji o podboju Kanaanu. The aim of Dziadosz’s monograph on Gilgal is a historical-critical analysis of the Deuteronomic and Deuteronomistic traditions about the conquest of Canaan, in which Gilgal, located near Jericho, played a crucial role. Dziadosz’s research is interdisciplinary in nature. He analyses ethnographic, topographical and archaeological data about Gilgal, while in the analysis of biblical texts he combines a synchronic and diachronic approach. This is the first complete and comprehensive study of the history of Gilgal in the pre-monarchy period in the Polish literature. It provides an incentive to continue the study of biblical Gilgal in part two of the Deuteronomistic history (1 Sam – 2 Kgs) and in the prophetic books.
