Apocalypse (patristic interpretation), Victorinus of Petovium, theological exegesis in the ancient Church, Latin biblical commentary on ApocalypseAbstract
This examination of the reception of the Apocalypse is very stimulating. This article attempts to present the theological interpretation of the book of Revelation given by Victorinus of Petovium (III-IV century). In Apocalypsin Johannis is the earliest commentary on the last biblical book. This Latin writer explores some interesting aspects of the Apocalypse of John as well as a rich variety of apocalyptic and theological themes. Victorinus indicates that the last book of the Bible is a convenient „illustrative file” and a source of enlightenment to theology. This conviction appears in various occasions of his commentary. Victorinus interpreted Revelation of St John in millenarist terms and remains faithful to the traditional interpretation, as well as in modest allegorical rules.References
