Abstract

The church of the first centuries, willing to introduce the basic truths of faith to baptism candidates in the best possible way, very often made use of symbols known from everyday life during the preparations and the sacramental celebration itself. The author of the article analyzes the symbolism of a robe present in ancient catechumenal and baptismal rites, based on the teaching of catechists from the 4th century (John Chrysostom, Theodore of Mopsuestia, Cyril of Jerusalem). Therefore, while citing the most important elements of catechists' teaching and indicating the moments in celebration where the significance of the abovementioned symbol seems to be particularly emphasized, the author tries to indicate the reasons for similar practice.
