The ancient versions used to translate the expression עֵדוּת לְיִשְׂרָאֵל in Ps 122:4 as „testimony (for/of) Israel”. Nowadays the most of exegetists render it as “statute for Israel”. Who is right? The aim of this article is to give an answer.
First author analyzes the Hebrew manuscripts (1), the ancient versions (2) and the modern translations (3). Then, he presents the opinion of the ancient and the modern biblical scholars (4). The next section gathers the arguments for both meaning “statue” and “testimony”. (5). In the conclusion author suggests to interpret עֵדוּת in Psalm 122 as “testimony” and translates the whole verse: “There the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD ([there is] testimony to Israel), to give thanks to the name of the LORD”.
