The Bearing of the Word in Light of Aquinas’ Commentary to the Prologue of the Gospel of John (John 1:1–2)

In order to properly understand in what way the Word of God is also God, it is necessary to demonstrate the relationship between them, as it is explicated in this sentence: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God”. The Word is equal to the Father and expresses His whole being, as it is consubstantial with the Father. Since “Word” indicates an intellectual and immaterial process, it thus retains the similarity in nature to the Origin, which is why the Word is called the “Son” and its proceeding from the Origin is called the “begetting”. The aim of this article is to delineate the begetting of the Word in Aquinas’ Commentary to the Prologue of the Gospel of John in order to gather the linguistic and philosophical significance of this issue.
