The paper deals with various cases of violence against women attested in the letters of Augustine (especially the Divjak letters), among them rape, kidnapping, and beating. The letters of Augustine usually concentrate on other issues, but they happen to show occasionally the difficult situation of women in the everyday life of the fifth century North Africa. They show the inefficiency of the state law and the growing danger from barbarian invasions.
